Our Impact

Southwest Youth Services (SYS) has seen tremendous growth in Native American communities through our Native Youth Wellness Corps. One notable highlight to share includes the recent visit from AmeriCorps VISTA National Director, Paul Monteiro, who spoke with our VISTAs on their experience serving in the VISTA program and what service looks like in Native American communities. Through this experience three of our VISTAs (Adelina Gomez, Amelia Cate and Rachel Overmier) were featured on the VISTA National social media outlets.

On the ground, our VISTAs have secured over $500,000 in grants to create capacity for health and wellness programming in Native communities, increased volunteer recruitment efforts from non- existent to 80% parent and community involvement, and successfully engaged over 2,000 Native American middle and high school students in higher education opportunities and financial aid services.

One VISTA to highlight is Leandra Baca, located in the Pueblo of Jemez, who is currently serving with the Walatowa Head Start to implement a Language Immersion Program for children ages 3-5. She has had great success in community outreach and obtaining the approval of Tribal Leadership and elders to launch her program on September 29th for Grandparents Day at the Head Start. She assisted in coordinating staff and volunteers to provide a traditional meal for all, engaged elders to teach the kids how to make oven bread in hornos and how to make traditional cookies. Throughout the day, 13 elders and 32 kids were provided opportunities to learn and speak in the Towa language in a communal setting..
